Are Rowing Machines Good for Belly Fat?

When it comes to getting in shape, you may feel confident in your ability to tone your arms and legs.  You may have even lost a significant amount of weight in the past! However, when it comes to belly fat, this can be a significant trouble area for many people, even for those who are consistently active. Many of us spend hours doing crunches or searching for ways to specifically reduce stubborn belly fat.

Like many cases, the simple answer to your problem is the correct answer. Burning belly fat is all about burning more an excess amount of calories. There are many ways to do this but one activity that does burn calories effectively is rowing.

What is Rowing?

Rowing is a fun exercise that can be performed at the gym, at home or on a river, lake, or ocean. However, most people will find rowing machines in their home the easiest to access. An individual will sit on a seat placed on a track, pulling a rope. The rope will provide resistance as the rower glides back and forth over the track. Most people will feel this workout in their shoulders and thighs, but this is also great for your heart and respiratory system.

If you are interested in taking your rowing outside, you will find yourself making similar motions and working similar muscles.

Why You Cannot Target Belly Fat

Targeting fat is not like targeting muscles. When you work to build muscle, you can perform exercises that focus on your biceps, triceps, or quads. When you want to reduce fat, you can only reduce your overall fat. Fat reduction cannot be targeted, regardless of trouble areas. Some individuals may carry more fat in certain areas, but the principle is still the same. Therefore, if you want to reduce belly fat, you need to reduce overall fat.

Reducing overall fat is done by burning calories and eating healthy. One way to increase the number of calories burned is by performing cardio exercises. This may include walking, jogging, running, weightlifting, and even rowing. The key is to increase your heart rate while working out.

How Rowing Can Help You Lose Belly Fat

As mentioned, cardio exercises, like rowing, can help an individual burn calories at a more effective rate. Government recommendations suggest that individuals practice 75 – 150 minutes of moderate cardio every week. Try to follow these standards to help reduce your overall body fat and ultimately belly fat.

Do you often get bored on the rowing machine? Rowing does not necessarily mean you need to stay at a consistent speed for the duration of your exercise. Try sprints for 20 minutes. This means you will pull at a quick pace for 20 to 30 seconds, followed by 20 to 30 seconds of moderate pace. This can help keep your heart rate up, allowing you to burn even more calories.

Unfortunately, the rowing machine will not help you burn belly fat at a rate faster than some other cardio methods. But it is still an excellent way to get some high-intensity exercise, leading to overall body fat loss. Lastly, it is important to recognize that in order to burn body fat you need to make sure your diet is healthy with the appropriate calorie intake.
