Best Elliptical Machines for Seniors

For seniors who want to stay in shape, an elliptical machine is a safe, challenging, easy to use option. Knowing which elliptical machine to buy for the elderly, however, can be more difficult.

Below you’ll find out what you should consider when looking for the best elliptical machines for seniors.

Senior Elliptical Benefits

Elliptical trainers are popular among many age groups and for a variety of reasons, but seniors can benefit just as much (if not more) than any other age group. For one, ellipticals are low-impact, so they’re easy on your joints. They can also improve bone density, keep your ligaments strong, and increase flexibility. All of these factors make elliptical machines for senior citizens a great idea.

Consider Durability

Durability and stability should be among your top considerations when it comes to elliptical machines for senior citizens. If you choose a low-quality machine, it’s likely to break down quickly, whereas a higher quality option will last for years.

The most reliable machines tend to me more expensive unless they are on sale. An elliptical that costs at least $1000 is a good indication of quality and stability.

A good elliptical should also be able to hold 300 pounds. Even if you weigh substantially less than this, a high-capacity machine will be more stable and durable. Also look for an elliptical machine made from metal rather than cheap plastic parts. Sealed, self-lubricating bearings are also a good sign. Rear and center drive ellipticals are also often more durable than others.

Consider Performance

Seniors should always try out elliptical machines before they buy one. As you do this, make sure the pedals offer enough resistance and that they feel in line with your natural stride. If the handlebars move, you want this motion to coordinate with the pedaling.

An 18-22″ stride is a good range. Ellipticals with 25-30 pound flywheels will also offer a smoother and safer ride than those that weigh less, though a 20 pound flywheel is sufficient. Try out several ellipticals and then choose the one that feels most comfortable and sturdy to you.

Consider Additional Features

Each elliptical user is different and may want different features. Wireless pulse monitors, large display screens for easy reading or watching TV, and a machine that can stream podcasts and music from your phone may be important to you. Models with personalized workouts and programs, or those that offer video workouts, can help you stay motivated. When choosing features, we would recommend choosing a model that has all of the features you’re looking for but that does not come with features you don’t need as this can quickly become expensive.
