Do Ellipticals Help Lose Belly Fat

One of the more popular exercise machines in the public gym is the elliptical trainer. They’re known for their ability to replicate the actions of running, walking, or climbing stairs without the high-pressure impact associated with those movements. But since the Coronavirus pandemic has made going to the gym somewhat less convenient, there’s been a surge of interest in home-based elliptical trainers. For this reason, there are more questions being asked about ellipticals. One of the most common is, “Do ellipticals help lose belly fat?” To answer that question and more, we’ve put together this post.

Exercise and Diet

When it comes to losing weight, exercise alone will not necessarily be enough. Weight loss occurs when the body expends more calories than it consumes. For this reason, an effective weight loss program needs to be based on both diet and exercise. You could spend 12 hours a day on your elliptical, but if you spend the other 12 hours eating sugars and fats, you still might not lose any weight.

Targeted Fat Burning?

Another thing to realize is that it may be impossible to target the burning of fat through exercise. Trying to specify which fat deposits are burned by focusing on specific exercises doesn’t appear to work. Exercise combined with a healthy diet can reduce the body’s overall fat levels, but it doesn’t appear possible to tailor an exercise to reduce fat in a specific area of the body.

Do Ellipticals Help Lose Belly Fat?

While the fact that it seems to be impossible to specifically target the loss of belly fat may be discouraging for an elliptical owner, the reality is that the combination of exercise and a proper diet will burn fat deposits from all over the body. If you’re losing weight due to exercise and dietary restrictions, by consequence, you’re losing belly fat as well. This knowledge alone should motivate you to continue to use the elliptical if you’re trying to reduce belly fat.

How Many Calories Will Using an Elliptical Burn?

The exact number of calories that you can burn on an elliptical will vary with the intensity of your workout as well as your age and body size. However, spending 30 minutes on an elliptical can burn around 300 calories. This may not be as much as you’d burn if you were jogging, but the fact that the elliptical virtually removes the impact caused by running means that it can be a safe alternative for those who cannot, or should not, perform high impact exercises.

Is the Fat-Burning Zone A Myth?

More and more evidence is showing that the fat-burning zone is a myth. The principle behind it is based on keeping your heart rate at around 60% of its maximum capacity. But in actuality, that’s not a very strenuous workout at all. The concept is based on some scientific principles, however, higher-intensity exercise will burn more calories and ultimately more fat.

Maximizing Your Elliptical Workout

There are some basic principles behind elliptical workouts that can increase the number of calories you’re burning without putting yourself at risk of injury.

While using the handles of the elliptical will also help you keep balance and prevent you from falling, they should be actively pushed and pulled rather than simply being used as a stabilizer.

Keeping your feet flat on the elliptical footrests becomes more difficult as your body tires or if the resistance is increased. However, you should resist the urge to stand up on your tiptoes when using the elliptical. Keeping the soles of your feet flat on the foot pedals increases the number of leg muscles you’re using and will end up burning more calories.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Although the idea of HIIT is somewhat contrary to the concept of a fat-burning zone, the two can be used in combination to increase the number of calories you’re burning. Alternating between short bursts of high-intensity motions and reduced-intensity intervals is one of the more effective ways to burn calories.
