How Many Gallons in a Swim Spa?

For those who truly love swimming, public swimming pools can start feeling like they’re more hassle than they’re worth.  You have to pay every time you want to go for a swim and you’re limited as to when you’re able to use it.  Having a swimming pool on your own property may be incredibly more convenient, but if you don’t have the appropriate space you feel like you’re completely out of luck.  However, swim spas were created for people just like you!  They can fit into a small area and still allow you to practice all your favourite swimming strokes.  But just exactly how big are swim spas?  How many gallons in a swim spa?  Although there are a wide variety of swim spa sizes available on the market, we’ve put together this article to give you a better idea.

Swim Spa Sizes

Early swim spas were actually quite compact.  They were made to fit into smaller spaces without taking into account the actual space needed to swim comfortably.  It’s since been found that a 10 foot swim spa might be too short to allow for a natural feeling swim.  Smaller tanks create more turbulence which makes swimming more difficult.  And for taller people, a single missed stroke could result in being pushed to the end of the tank.  As these limitations were discovered, swim spa tanks have been built larger to provide a more comfortable swimming sensation.

Dual Tank Swim Spas

Another more recent innovation in swim spa technology was the addition of a second water tank.  It was found that people wanted to be able to share the use of the swim spa with their family and friends.  By adding an extra tank, people could soak and relax while someone else continued swimming.  This secondary tank is small enough to easily keep the water temperature at hot tub levels.  The addition of massaging water jets allows many of today’s swim spas to equal the experience found in a hot tub.

How Many Gallons Does A Swim Spa Hold?

At the smaller end of the Hydropool swim spa range you’ll find tanks around 14 feet in length.  At an average of eight feet in width and four and half feet in depth a tank this size will hold around 1900 gallons.  At the larger end of the scale, you’ll find swim spa tanks that are closer to 20 feet in length.  With the same average width and depth, these larger tanks can hold over 2000 gallons.

Maintaining Water Chemistry Balance

Knowing how many gallons of water your swim spa holds becomes very important when adding chemicals.  Chemicals are required to keep the water clean and uncontaminated.  The volume of water in the swim spa is the foundation of the calculations required to determine the amount of chemicals that need to be added.  If you can’t locate this information in your owner’s guidebook, you’ll need to calculate the volume manually.  This is done by multiplying the length, width and depth of the swim spa tank in inches.  Multiplying this result by 0.00434 will give you the volume in gallons.  To convert gallons to litres you can multiply the number of gallons by 4.546.

Choosing the Right Sized Swim Spa

Choosing the right sized swim spa comes down to how it will be used most.  If it’s going to be used solely for swimming by one or two people, a smaller swim spa matched to your height might be appropriate.  If you like to entertain guests or have a large family, you may want to go for a larger swim spa that will allow it to be used by several people at once.  Take careful stock of how you envision your swim spa being used before deciding on which size will be appropriate.
