Not only will you save time and money from going to and from the gym, you’ll be able to lift weights whenever the fancy strikes you. This could be between periods during a hockey game on TV, while you’re waiting for your dinner to cook or as a quick pick me up right after you get out of bed. How much you want to lift is probably different than how much you’re able to lift right now. You want to make sure that loading up your barbell is relatively easy and fuss-free. When you’re at maximum capacity you don’t want to have to put every single plate you own onto the barbell. For this reason, it might be more efficient to have a few more heavy plates to allow you to reach your maximum lift without having to spend too much time adding them to the barbell. You might be able to get around the hassle of constantly changing plates if you have more than one barbell. Too much plate changing between exercises will increase your rest periods and decrease the effectiveness of your workout. But you also have to take into account that the more bars you have, the more likely you’ll need to buy more weight plates as well. Properly evaluating these different scenarios will likely come down to your budget and the amount of space you have available.

Your ideal weight plate set will allow you to expediently go through your routine without having to spend an inordinate amount of time changing the weight plates. You’ll want a set of plates that allows you to perform your regular workout while giving you enough room to grow with time.
