Stationary bikes have become a very popular piece of equipment for both home and gym fitness aficionados. They provide a low impact, cardiovascular workout while strengthening the leg muscles in a safe, comfortable environment. But there are two types of stationary bikes to choose from; recumbent or upright. It seems that recumbent bikes have become more popular of late. By why recumbent bike vs upright bike? How Are Recumbent Bikes Different?

Recumbent bikes allow the rider to sit in a reclined body position as opposed to the upright position a user finds themselves in on an upright bike. The pedals on a recumbent bike are positioned in front of the body rather than underneath the body like on an upright bike. And the seat on recumbent bikes are generally larger and more comfortable than those found on upright bikes.

Recumbent Bikes for Lower Back Problems

Because of the way the rider is positioned on a recumbent bike, weight is taken off the back and lower spine. Instead of sitting straight up with all your weight on your back when using an upright bike, the recumbent bike allows those with lower back pain to get in a biking workout. The recumbent bike adds extra support that takes excess weight off the lower back.

Recumbent Bikes for Joint Problems

Although any type of bike riding is a much lower impact workout than jogging, the recumbent bike reduces the strain on the joints in the lower half of the body even more than an upright bike does. Knees and ankles are supporting much less weight on a recumbent bike which allows the rider to complete their workout with very little joint friction. You won’t be able to stand up on a recumbent bike like you can on an upright bike, but this further reduces the chances of injury.

If you suffer from pain associated with arthritis of the back or hips, a recumbent bike can help alleviate this pain during a cycling workout. By evenly spreading out the weight of the body, the back and hips aren’t subjected to excess weight that can cause discomfort.

Recumbent Bikes for A More Comfortable Ride

The seat on a recumbent bike is typically much larger and more padded than those found on upright bikes and this can make for a much more comfortable ride, especially if using the exercise machine for long periods of time. Anyone who has jumped on a bicycle and traveled long distances without any prior training understands the amount of pain that can be caused by a small, relatively unpadded bike seat. Recumbent bike seats are made for comfort, even for the biking novice.
